One of Australia’s fastest-growing regions is the Byford area – around 37 kilometres south-west of Perth, Western Australia. The Western Australian Government has just delivered an 8-kilometre rail line - the METRONET Byford Rail Extension - to support the region’s rapid growth. We are proud to have helped deliver this milestone project, working alongside the MetCONNX alliance – a partnership between Laing O’Rourke, KBR, Colliers and the Public Transport Authority (PTA).

One of Australia’s fastest-growing regions is the Byford area – around 37 kilometres south-west of Perth, Western Australia. With a population expected to double by 2036 the Western Australian Government has just delivered an 8-kilometre rail line - the METRONET Byford Rail Extension - to support the region’s rapid growth.

We are proud to have helped deliver this milestone project, working alongside the MetCONNX alliance – a partnership between Laing O’Rourke, KBR, Colliers and the Public Transport Authority (PTA).

Keeping passengers safe

The METRONET Byford Rail Extension connects local communities to the Perth CBD with a congestion free 46-minute journey. The project includes a new Byford train station with 400 parking bays, a new elevated station built in Armadale with 200 parking bays, plus the removal of seven level crossings. Works also included two new road over rail bridges, eight hectares of new public open space through the rail line elevation, and eight kilometres of new shared paths for pedestrians and cyclists.

Our niche expertise in systems engineering and safety assurance (SESA), as well as reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM), was the reason we were selected to support on this landmark project. With passenger safety the utmost priority, our team worked to verify over 10,000 contractual, safety, and specialist requirements for inclusion in the final designs. We also developed multiple safety cases for the project, including a unique safety case for Clara Street Level Crossing. Through the identification of system hazards and mitigation strategies, we provided the safety assurance case for the entire 8km stretch of the METRONET Byford Rail Extension, as well as the two new stations in Byford and Armadale.

What we do in transport

In Australia, we have a strong history delivering SESA and RAM solutions across a number of key transport projects. Our work on the METRONET Byford Rail Extension follows the recent completion of the Metro Tunnel in Victoria - a transformative rail project enhancing access across Melbourne via a new high-capacity rail line.

Our expert teams deliver end-to-end systems engineering and safety assurance delivery, reliability, availability and maintainability analysis, functional safety analysis, and enabling successful commissioning and integration across various rail systems and infrastructure.
