Frazer-Nash's Kevin Hamson discusses the thought-provoking topics on the agenda at this year's International Conference on Underwater Acoustics on 9 September.

The International Conference on Underwater Acoustics (ICUA2020), originally scheduled to take place in Southampton, UK in July, will now be running as a ‘virtual’ one-day conference on Wednesday 9 September 2020.

Taking place during the International Year of Sound, a global initiative to highlight the importance of sound and related sciences to society, the event is organised by the UK’s Institute of Acoustics (IOA) and will feature presentations on the latest research, applications and advances in the field of underwater acoustics.

Frazer-Nash Principal Consultant, Kevin Hamson, who is on the IOA’s organising committee, said:

“I’m really looking forward to taking part in ICUA 2020, albeit from my desk! The conference is organised into two parallel sessions, with almost 50 international presentations on subjects as diverse as signal processing, the impact of sound, acoustic metamaterials, underwater propagation and seabed sediments. Participants will get the chance to pose questions to the presenters, via the live Q&A link; and the sessions will be recorded, so you can catch up on the whole programme when you have time.

“As a ‘virtual’ conference the fees are able to be much lower – just £50 for the full conference or £20 for students – and with no travel and subsistence costs this means it offers excellent value for money, particularly if you are an international delegate. You’ll also still be able to network with other delegates as we’ve incorporated ‘chat rooms’ into the programme. Come and say hello – alongside my role on the organising committee, I’ve been leading some interesting work on underwater acoustics within Frazer-Nash on topics including acoustic scattering, flow noise generation, and propeller noise generation and radiation. I’d be delighted to talk to you about these subjects.

“The work of the organising committee started around a year and a half ago, and I’m really pleased that we’re able to run ICUA2020, despite the challenges of the ongoing pandemic. It has been a privilege to be part of the effort to ensure we can still deliver interesting and thought-provoking topics that will stimulate lots of discussion for our conference attendees.”
